| Personal History | Ellis Thornwell was born in a quiet town called “New Alambama” on Centauri VII, where the soil was rich and the mornings always smelled faintly of honeysuckle. His family had tended the same flower fields for three generations, cultivating tulips, roses, and lavender that found their way into village markets and city festivals alike. From an early age, Ellis learned the rhythms of planting and harvesting, the patience required to coax beauty from the earth, and the discipline of waking before dawn to care for something fragile yet resilient. Though he loved the land, Ellis harbored a fascination with the sky. He would watch the merchant vessels glide along the horizon. By the time he turned eighteen, he felt the pull of space stronger than the pull of the soil. With his father’s blessing, he left the family farm and joined Starfleet. At first, the space station felt foreign—salt replacing the scent of blossoms, rope and tar replacing the softness of Centauri VII. Yet Ellis quickly discovered that his farm-bred patience translated well to life on deck. Where others rushed or grew restless, he endured. He was steady under pressure, respectful of process, and unshaken by long stretches of waiting. His crewmates began to call him “Petal,” a nickname he carried with a quiet pride. Over the years, Ellis rose through the ranks. He became known not only for his calm leadership, even in the teeth of storms. He likened his ship to a garden: every sailor a plant needing care, discipline, and room to grow. His men flourished under his guidance. During the Dominion Cold War, the flower farm was selected to command the USS Serenity, being pulled out of mothball. Ellis spent a couple of months in command patrolling borders, mostly, with fleets being reorganized, he was granted a newly built ship. The Midway Thornwel assumed command of the Midway in 2373. The Yeager-class, often considered underpowered compared to front-line cruisers, was designed primarily for escort and convoy defense operations. Ellis, however, embraced the ship’s limitations, turning them into advantages: the Midway became known for its hit-and-fade tactics, sensor stealth maneuvers, and defensive coordination with convoys. When the Dominion invaded in 2373, Ellis and the Midway were immediately reassigned to supply-line defense out of Starbase 211. His ship participated in: The Defense of Coridan (2373): The Midway provided critical cover for evacuation transports as Dominion forces attempted to cripple Federation dilithium shipments. Operation Hammerfall (2374): Serving as escort to a squadron of Akira-class carriers, Thornwel’s ship absorbed heavy Jem’Hadar assault in order to buy time for carrier groups to deploy their fighter wings. Thornwel himself suffered injuries when the bridge was breached, but he refused to be evacuated until the ship was secure. The Convoy of 2375: Perhaps his most famous action, Thornwel commanded a relief convoy through the Argolis Cluster during the final push of the war. Despite Dominion pursuit, he managed to shepherd over two dozen freighters through hostile territory with minimal losses, ensuring supplies reached the Allied fleet prior to the Battle of Cardassia. The Yeager-class itself never achieved the fame of the Galaxy or Defiant designs, but thanks to Thornwel’s record, the Midway became a symbol of the unsung workhorses of the Dominion War ships that lacked glamour but carried the Federation on their backs. To this day, his quarters carry the faint scent of dried lavender, tucked into a small wooden box, his last tie to the farm where his story began. |
